Salvador Dali

“Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.” – Salvador Dali

Dali was a highly imaginative man, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. Let’s see some of his work.

Update, November 6, 2014:
This bowl of vegetables is an odd one out painting here, because it isn’t made by Dali. It belongs to Giuseppe Arcimboldo who created a lot of imaginative portrait made of fruits, vegetables and other objects. This was a new information for me, and I’m happy that I could learn something new. If you also would like to find out more about this picture, please see Mark’s explanation below. He added some useful links as well.

  1. Hi Agnes, I found this wonderful blog along with your photography blog after you ‘liked’ a post on my blog, “A Guide For Distinguishing Between Scarlett Johansson And A Scarlet Sunrise”. Both your blogs are really good and also they feel really good in the sense that they feel like a summers day, it’s really refreshing. You also have very good taste in art and I am really happy with a couple of new artists that I have discovered here as well as Mr. Dali here who is a long time favourite of mine.
I’m really sorry to do this but I thought I should point out that one of the paintings on this page is not by Dali, the painting just above the text “sculptures” of the bowl of vegetables that looks like a man upside down is actually a painting by Giuseppe Arcimboldo here is the link http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giuseppe_Arcimboldo_-_The_Vegetable_Gardener_-_WGA00841.jpg I feel really bad about pointing this out to you and I hope you don’t mind me saying, but I thought about it and thought that if it was my blog I would want someone to tell me if they noticed. I used to have a Giuseppe Arcimboldo artwork book years ago and it was full of very similar paintings to that one and I distinctly remember it. However, the irony is that if Salvador Dali were to know that people thought that it was his painting, he would be delighted because he was a huge admirer of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and it is from him where Dali got his inspiration for his many hidden faces in his paintings. If you haven’t heard of him he is well worth exploring, here is his wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Arcimboldo Sorry about the length of this comment but I’m sure you can understand why it is that way. Thanks once again for sharing these wonderful pieces of art and the photos in your other blog.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Mark. I’m glad you like my blogs. Somehow I always felt that this bowl of vegetables isn’t really the style of Dali. It always seemed to me a bit different, but when I searched for it I didn’t find the wikipedia page of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, just a lot of other sites, where it was attributed to him. But I’m really delighted now that finally somebody could help me and show me, who made it. I’ll check out the artwork of Giuseppe Arcimboldo as well. Thank you very much for your help.
